I want to discover new paths to go when digging for music by being able to see tracks in my libraries from which artist or label I only have one or a few.
For that I’d like to create smartlists to filter on exactly that.

Hmm not sure a smartlist is the best option there, but maybe Artist Cleanup can help you? If properly cleaned, you can tell how many tracks an artist has and with an ALT+Click it shows the tracks for that artist. If the sidepanel is open, it shows them in there, makes digging easy. Combine it with favorite playlists (and hotkeys) and you can do it all quite quickly without switching pages.
Interesting, I didn’t use artist cleanup yet. It’s is getting close but often it’s missing more context. I could really need my custom tags to narrow things down in advance instead of clicking through the names. Aside from that it doesn’t work with labels.
I tried your suggested workflow and it feels a bit cluttered on my laptop screen. I also discovered that the search is a wildcard search. Some artist names are not working well, like “Hi” in this case.
